Community Grants

In 2023, together with a national team of partners, we launched the Ocean Literacy Community Grants program. This was identified as a priority action in the Canadian Ocean Literacy Strategy. The Community Grants Program provides more accessible funding opportunities for community-driven ocean literacy initiatives that are regionally, culturally, and linguistically relevant.

Currently, four types of Community Grants are available.

Blue Creators Grant

Through the Blue Creators Grant, we empower creators to use their art form as a community-driven, participatory tool to spark crucial ocean conversations. Art deepens public understanding of ocean science, builds emotional connections, and ignites possibilities and pathways for community-led ocean-climate action.

Ocean Week Canada Community Event Grant

We want to help you connect people with the ocean and the waterways leading to it! As part of this, COLC is supporting events and activities that will take place in communities across Canada during Ocean Week Canada 2026.

Water Rangers Excursion Grant

COLC has partnered with Water Rangers, a national organization that provides tools for classrooms and communities to care for local waterways. Through this grant opportunity, aimed at engaging youth in community science for water, educators can apply for a water testing kit and a community science training session for their classroom/learning setting.

Blue Teaching Fellow Grant

The Blue Teaching Fellow Grant provides funding to 2-4 dynamic classroom teachers in Canada (per year) who are championing ocean-water learning in their teaching practice and demonstrating innovation and impact in their school and community. The aim of the Blue Teaching Fellow is to help support peer mentoring – teachers inspiring teachers – through national webinars, conference presentations, and featured contributions to the Blue Learning Lab
